Hi all – did anyone say that best laid plans don’t always work out??? WELL, once again we need to change the date of the book club discussion for the book, MY FRIENDS. It turns out that March 5-6 is the annual March for MHC fund drive and we want to enable our Class Agents and our entire class to focus on that.
And again, between Gerri’s travel schedule and mine, it seems the next best date for the Book Club meeting is Tuesday March 10 at 7:00 pm ET. I hope you all can make this date, too.
To keep everything in one place, I am keeping the original email about the book with the new link for the Zoom call. I apologize for all the date changes but I know we are going to have a great conversation about this very interesting book:
Hello everyone, for our next Class Book Club meeting we are going to be discussing MY FRIENDS, by Fredrik Backman. This book is very quirky, but also funny and thought-provoking and ultimately all about great friendships. I loved it and I think it will make for a very good discussion.
Gerri and I will be leading the book club and we thought it would be nice to have this discussion with all of you, our friends, on March 10th at 7:00 ET.
Here is what was written about MY FRIENDS on goodreads:
Goodreads Choice Award Winner for Readers’ Favorite Fiction (2025), Nominee for Readers’ Favorite Audiobook (2025)
#1 New York Times bestselling author Fredrik Backman returns with an unforgettably funny, deeply moving tale of four teenagers whose friendship creates a bond so powerful that it changes a complete stranger’s life twenty-five years later.
And here is one of the reviews I found:
“Before I declare this the best book Fredrik Backman has ever written, let me admit that I’ve lost count of how many times I cried, laughed too loudly (scaring the pets), or whined and howled while reading it. Nothing I say—no word I write—can adequately capture my feelings or do justice to this incredible book, even if I endlessly repeat the word “amazing” over and over again. My best advice? Don’t just read it and marvel at Backman’s brilliance. Instead, prepare to wipe your tears after finishing, and if you’re lucky enough to have people in your life like the characters in this book, call your best friends—the ones who helped shape you—and tell them, “I love you and I trust you.” If you can, visit them and give them the longest hugs, which is exactly what I plan to do.
This book is about an endless sea, a profound friendship, and a true love story. It delves into grief, sacrifice, fart jokes, uproarious laughter, spontaneous adventures, learning to trust, and protecting loved ones at all costs. It’s about the serendipity of art. It’s about finding your own pearl in an oyster shell and learning to let go, even when it feels like shards of glass stabbing your heart.
I haven’t read a friendship story this genuine, heartfelt, clumsy, straightforward, smart, sentimental, shocking, and emotionally resonant in a very long time.”
I hope as many of you as possible can join us for this fun evening with “friends”,
Liz
